Roux-Y gastric bypass

In this procedure, the passage of food through the duodenum is completely eliminated. To do this, the small intestine is cut 50 cm below the duodenum and connected to the so-called gastric pouch. A gastric pouch is a small residual stomach that is separated from the rest of the stomach. The digestive secretions of the bile and the pancreas coming from the duodenum are reintroduced into the small intestine 100 - 150 cm below. With this operation, a very good weight reduction can be achieved. As an existing insulin resistance improves within days due to the metabolic change, a complete remission of diabetes mellitus type 2 can be achieved in many cases. Approximately 80% of type 2 diabetics treated in this way are insulin-free after this operation. In addition, this surgical procedure is particularly suitable for patients whose obesity is caused by sweets. Heartburn is practically non-existent postoperatively, which is why this procedure is also very suitable for patients with acid reflux. Postoperatively, lifelong vitamin control and the intake of vitamin supplements is necessary.

Outlet repair for dumping after Roux-Y gastric bypass

Occasionally patients suffer from dumping syndrome after Roux-Y gastric bypass. With the Overstitch System, a novel method of endoscopic suturing, the diameter of the connection between the stomach and the small intestine can be reduced without surgery using a gastroscope during a gastroscopy. The slower passage of food from the stomach into the small intestine means that dumping syndrome can be treated very effectively.

Operating procedure

Patients are admitted to hospital on the day before the operation. In preparation for the morning of the operation, you will be provided with the surgical gowns by our nursing staff. The entire operation takes place under general anaesthesia as a laparoscopy and can last about two hours. Following the operation, they are often monitored in the intensive care unit for one night. They are usually discharged on the 7th day. The first follow-up appointment is about 4-6 weeks later.
